Creating Ambiance in the Kitchen

I found a pair of mid-century lamps last week at a Barn Sale here in Nashville that I couldn’t pass up.  I bought them without knowing whether or not they worked, so I set them up in the kitchen to test them with light bulbs.

Painting Projects – One Paint Color, Three Ways

Spring is nearly, finally here! I actually have some spring bulbs popping up in my yard, which makes me hopeful for warmer weather.

Spring!

Spring always inspires a few projects around my house, so here’s a few I finished up this week. Let’s start with the mid-century dresser I found at an estate sale in the late fall.  I had been looking for just the right piece to use in my dining room as a sideboard with lots of storage.

Staging a Dated Sofa – Styling Tricks from The Decorologist

I did another Speed Staging this week where I had to pull some magic out of my hat.  Well, not really magic.  But I had to be resourceful.  Below is the living room of the house about to go on the market to sell.   I chose a new (more neutral!) wall color for them, which should be painted within the next couple of days.   Is there something we could do to update and improve this sofa?  Well, yes, and  I’m hoping these tips may be helpful for you:

The Light at the End of the Tunnel? The Best Light Bulb for Designers

I must admit, when the government began fazing out incandescent light bulbs a few years ago, I began stockpiling them in my basement.  Incandescent light bulbs were at the top of my Christmas list at the end of the year when 100-watts were discontinued.  I still have a few dozen left, but my supply won’t last forever.

The Antidote to the Sofa Loveseat Combination

It’s probably no surprise that I contemplate interiors more than most.  It’s as important to me how a room feels as how it looks, and I’m always trying to understand why it makes me feel a certain way.

I have often spoke about how much I dislike the  sofa – loveseat combination because it is both a lazy default and an option that is very limiting in regard to arrangement.  At a recent speaking engagement at the international Real Estate Staging Association, I  dubbed it the “lofa” and discouraged it’s use whenever possible.

Merridian Grand Opening with Laurie from Trading Spaces

Many of you know that Merridian is my favorite furniture store in Nashville – it’s where I held my Furniture Arrangement Workshop last year.  The store recently moved to it’s bigger, better location just a few minutes down the road and held a Grand Opening yesterday featuring designer Laurie Hickson Smith, forever famous for her role on TLC’s Trading Spaces.
