Hanging Out with Houzz at Nashville Event

Last night I attended a debut Houzz.com event, along with a standing-room only group of Nashville design professionals at Kenny & Company in the ultra-hip Gulch area of downtown.

Roller Coaster Ride

Bad things happen, good things happen.  And then more bad things happen.  And more good things happen.  So we can focus on the bad, or focus on the good.  Or strap ourselves in and try to just enjoy the roller coaster ride.  Here are a few high points on my roller coaster lately.

Two Things to Avoid When Designing a Room

When designing a room, it’s important to balance your furniture on the architecture of the space in order to avoid wonkiness.  In answer to your question, “wonkiness” is a very technical design term.  Ok, not really, but it’s a problem that we explored very specifically at my recent Furniture Arrangement Workshop at Merridian Home Furnishings here in Nashville.

You should avoid wonkiness if you can, but sometimes it can be a challenge in a space with lots of architectural problems like the dreaded corner fireplace, rooms with vaulted ceilings and odd angles, and spaces with lots of openings and half-walls.

Don’t Buy or Sell a Home Without Reading This

The real estate market is really heating up in Nashville. My assistant is booking more home staging appointments than I can keep up with!

Real Estate is HOT in Nashville

Many of those calls come from real estate agents who have come to rely on me for efficient and effective staging. I’ve worked with my share of great agents, the best of which care about one thing:  getting their clients what they want quickly. If they are really good, they’ll go the extra mile for you.  [Read more...]

Decorating for Smart People

Right before my Furniture Arrangement Workshop last Thursday night, a lady who was attending came up and asked me where remedial students should sit.

The Toughest Boss I’ve Ever Had

This self-employed, own-your-own-business thing is quite an education, I must tell you.  I know what it was like to work for “the man.”  For about a decade I worked as a school psychologist with specific duties, a set schedule, and regular work hours.

Spring Break is Decorating Time!

Winter is NOT my friend.  I just can’t stand cold weather and the shorter days that make me feel depleted of sunshine and light.  The change to daylight savings time really kicked my butt this year, but I am already loving the added daylight in the early evening.  After spending a lot of time indoors all winter, this tends to be the time of year that many of us get tired of our homes.  We want a little pick-me-up, but who can afford to redecorate every spring?  Since I’m on SPRING BREAK this week and not really working (well, we’ll see), I thought I’d share some ideas I included in an article a couple of weeks ago in The Tennessean about redecorating on a dime.

How I Reclaimed a Bunch of Hours a Week

Over the last week, something amazing happened.  Because of this amazing thing, I went to a hot yoga class (not once, but twice) after not working out in over a year.  I also got my hair cut, which I also haven’t done in over a year.
