Open Letter to Designers in Retail: Get Off Your High Horse

I have always known that I don’t quite fit in with the typical interior design crowd.  We have common interests, obviously, but there’s a snobbery there that’s difficult for me to stomach. I’ve always wondered if there are some courses offered in design schools that teach you to relate to people in a way that purposely condescends.  The seems particularly common in designers who work in retail establishments. I know this may be a generalization, but I’ve had several personal experiences lately that lend credence to my seemingly sweeping judgment.  If this is you, I’m calling you out on it.

There’s No Place Like Home

The last week has been a whirlwind.  I attended the annual international Real Estate Staging Association (RESA) convention in Las Vegas, where I spoke last year.

What’s Black, White, Gold and Green All Over? My Bathroom Remodel!

Despite more than a few hurdles, our upstairs bathroom renovation is moving along. It’s being carved out of a small space that includes a dormer window on the front of the house. This is where we started:

Wondering where the shower is?  No shower. Wondering where the toilet is?  This room was so tiny, the toilet was in the room down the hall.  I am not even joking.  We had to move the wall out ten inches into the hallway and punch a hole through a couple of walls in both directions to make room for a shower and a toilet.

Hoping for A Christmas Plumbing Miracle

I can’t wait to share some exciting restoration work that we are doing upstairs in our 1939 stone cottage. Our girls had to pack suitcases and drag their mattresses down to the basement studio to live temporarily until it’s complete and they will FINALLY get their own shower.  Yes, we’ve lived here almost 14 years with only one shower between the four of us. Of course, their new bath will be nicer than ours!  There are some old-house plumbing complications, so I’m hoping for a Christmas miracle that will keep the main floor plaster walls from having to be ripped up. Here’s a photo of the tear-out upstairs:

Sometimes the Dreams That Come True Are the Dreams Your Never Even Knew You Had

Now that the Christmas season is behind us, the dawn of a brand new year has come, which means new goals and dreams for our future.  What are the dreams of your future?

home stager dreams via

Ten years ago, I dreamed of spending my time doing something I truly loved.  Something I was passionate about.  That all started with a love of homes. A love of houses, real estate, interiors, renovation, paint colors – all those things and more.  But I had two degrees in the field of psychology.  What on earth was I doing dreaming about the places where we live, and how to make them everything we desired – a place of comfort, a place of peace, a place of solace and respite?

So I jumped on the crazy train and threw off the chains of my schooling and decided to pursue my passion for Home Staging.  I never could have dreamed where that train would take me. A few weeks ago, I found out that I won two national home staging industry awards.  The first one is for Top 10 Home Stager of the Year:

The second one is for Top Ten Redesigner of the Year:

And to top it off, I was honored at being elected a Regional Vice President of the Real Estate Staging Association® (RESA). When I told Mr. Man and the kids, they immediately said, “You mean assistant to the Regional Manager!”  If you never watched The Office, you may not get the reference, but they thought it was HILARIOUS.

Anyway, I’m thrilled by all of this good news and thrilled to offer you the chance to pursue YOUR dream of a career in home staging and design – even if that’s not what you intended 20 years ago.  Guess what?  DREAMS CHANGE.  And that’s totally OK.

I have four just TWO spots left for my January 29-31 course, where you can become certified as an Expert Psychological Stager™.  I believe there are four people who are DESTINED to chart a course that will change their life – I’m not sure who of you will have the courage and the drive to make the change, but I can’t wait to meet you in January!!!  Don’t let your dreams just be dreams – sign up today:

I’m Pretty Sure You You Don’t Have a Pegasus in Your Christmas Tree

Yesterday started out hectic.  I woke up at 4:00 a.m. and couldn’t go back to sleep, worrying about all the things I committed to do this week and how I was letting things go undone.  Finally got back to sleep around 6:00.  Mr. Man woke me up at 7:30, which meant I had 30 minutes to get out of the house and head to Arrington to install my Make-A-Wish Christmas Tree for the Kings Chapel Parade of Homes.
