Easy-Peasy Ways to Decorate a Pumpkin

Not all of us have the artistic skill to do intricately carved pumpkins for Halloween, so here are some easy (really!) ways to decorate pumpkins that will still wow the neighbors.  Try painting or drawing with a black Sharpee on white pumpkins to make cool designs like these.

You can punch little holes with a drill bit to create an outline you like.  Cut a hole in the bottom of the pumpkin, rather than the top.  Stick a string of twinkle lights inside and poke the lights through the holes like a Lite-Brite.

Have you ever seen a pumpkin tree before?  Be the first in your neighborhood to grow one!   Use those plastic pumpkins (Funkins) from a craft store - they are very light.   Hang a few lanterns and perch a few black crows.  Very spooky.

Forget all that carving.  Why not just adorn your pumpkins with masks and hats?  What a great idea!

Look at these beautiful gilded pumpkins.  Make your own sophisticated display using stickers and gold spray paint.

Squirt some spray mount on small pumpkins or gourds, then sprinkle with colored glitter.  Create a sweet display with silver candlestands or a cake pedestal.

If you have lots of pumpkins, why not spell out a spooky message?  Just have a few?  Spell “boo.”

I love these gourd people!  You don’t even have to do the faces, just artfully stack some colorful gourds on your porch.

Look how GORGEOUS this is!  Just stick to one color in an assortment of shapes and sizes.  The spider pumpkins are just the right touch.  And that cool moss doesn’t hurt, either.

How about using gourds or mini-pumpkins as placecards at your dinner party?  This could work now all the way to Thanksgiving.  Use a stencil or freehand  an initial with paint or a Sharpee pen.

I saved the best for last.   These enchanted toadstools made of gourds are my favorite!  My daughters were a gnome and a toadstool last Halloween – click here if you want to see how hilariously cute their costumes were.

I’m spending a bit of time here in Phoenix doing some great architectural tours – can’t wait to share that with you when I return home!

Funky Family Home – Hit or Miss?

This home was featured in the latest issue of Country Living.  It’s an eye-catcher, to be sure.  But on closer inspection, I began to question whether I loved it or hated it.  I don’t mean to be brutal, because it is a fun family home and everyone is entitled to their own sense of style.  But as a design-junkie, it’s fun to really dissect a space and figure out what I like and don’t like – what seems to work and what seems not to – and why.  Stick with me here.

Wowza!  I love this entry hallway.  Graphic, bold, modern – with just the right touch of traditional (it is an old home, afterall).  Love the art groupings on either side of the striped walls.  It totally creates a gallery effect.  I kind of like the chandelier, because the color is a surprise.  Not sure about those striped shades, though.  Overall, a pretty awesome space.  What do you think?

Bathing in My Dreams

Hope your weekend is off to a good start!  Today I’ve been working up a decoration consultation for a client and still need to reorganize all the staging props I picked up yesterday after de-staging a client’s home that is now under contract (hurray!).  Then I might watch a movie with Mr. Man tonight – we just got “Dinner with Schmucks” from Netflix.  Haven’t heard good reviews on it, so I hope we aren’t schmucks for watching it.

lowes tub Bathing in My Dreams I had to do some shopping in Lowe’s this week and was shamefully lusting after this huge clawfoot soaker tub.

Last night as I soaked in my very dingy 1939 tub (NOT clawfoot), I closed my eyes and dreamed about this: bathroom via cl Bathing in My Dreams

Living In and Loving a Small Space

I wanted to share the cool home of Lizzy Carnie, a designer with EuroTrash.  EuroTrash in the brainchild of my best friend, Annie Brahler.  Ok, Annie doesn’t know I exist, but I think she’s divine!   Her home is my favorite house ever (to see why, check it out here).  Anywho, Lizzy is a cutie-pie with a very hip 1,000 square foot home recently featured in Country Living. lizzie carney 1000 sq ft home via cl Living In and Loving a Small Space

Masked Portrait for Halloween

I’m too tired tonight (I usually write posts the night before they go up) and braindead to spend a lot of time on a lengthy blogpost.   But I found this great Halloween decorating idea in Country Living that made me laugh, so I have to share.

Make sure everyone dresses up for Halloween this year, even your artwork!  A pair of scissors and black construction paper make a cheeky mask for this bride.  You could use also use white fangs or horns or something else creepy like that.  I usually stretch cobwebs over my portraits, but this is even better!

Inside a Renovated Schoolhouse

I found this story about a renovated schoolhouse in the Catskills in Country Living.  The owners bought this 950 square foot beauty a few years ago for a mere $30,000.  It needed a lot of work, but wait until you see what they did:

Euro Trash Girl – Annie Brahler

OK, I admit it.  I’m kinda obsessed with Annie Brahler.  I’ve been following her for the last couple of years.  I’ve saved every picture from every magazine layout she’s ever had of her home – she’s been featured in two issues of Country Living, two issues of Home Companion (now defunct), and in Romantic Homes.  I’m sure there have been more.   Photos from this post are from those publications.

She lives in the most amazing home I have ever seen.  Annie lives in Jacksonville, Illinois.   Doesn’t sound like a terribly exciting place, but check out this unbelievable Beau Arts home!!!  She lives here with her 3 perfect children, 2 perfect dogs, and presumably, her perfect husband.  She certainly has a perfect lawn care guy.
