The Art of the Conversation Area

Creating furniture arrangements that make people feel welcomed and invited into a space is an art.   Rooms that have all the seating facing the television makes guests feel, well, unimportant.  Or at least not as important as that dang television.

Are Matching Bedroom Suites Outdated?

Not everyone is able to start from scratch in their bedroom.  I have a client who is fortunate enough to be getting rid of her dated bedroom suite and bedding and starting anew.  While her tastes are still traditional, she wants a look that is current and takes her forward without being trendy.  She wants a peaceful, neutral bedroom that will appeal to both her husband and herself.  This is the Inspiration Board I recently created to cast a vision for her space.

Bedroom Inspiration Board by The Decorologist

We decided to use an updated neutral on the walls and a grayed blue on the ceiling.  Notice that this is not a “matched set” bedroom.  If you are buying new bedroom furniture, please don’t buy a bedroom “suite” or matching set!   The creamy painted bedside tables and desk keep things light and current, but are anything but trendy.   Go for larger bedside tables than you are used to – maybe a pair of small dressers if you have room.  A bench at the end of the bed is the perfect place to take off your shoes or pile up your decorative pillows at night.  Finally, don’t forget to treat yourself to a really special hanging light fixture like the one pictured here.

Everything in this virtual design is not “made” to go together, but it all blends well.   I think it’s so much more interesting than a matchy-matchy bedroom suite.  Are you “over” traditional bedroom suites?

An Education in Color

Happy Friday!  I’m having a fabulous time hanging out in Atlanta, soaking up all the good color knowledge that Color Guru – I mean Colour Guru, Maria Killam, can dish out.  Friends, I am in training this week to be a newly-certified True Colour Expert!  Who knew education could be this much fun? true colour expert An Education in Color

In addition to attending this intensive color training workshop, I am also blessed to get to spend some time with my dear friend, LaJuana Gill, who is a very talented interior designer herself.   She and her husband recently moved from Nashville to Atlanta, so I am staying at their lovely home.  How lucky am I to have even more reason to chat with LaJuana about decorating?

Hope you all have as fabulous a weekend as I will have, but I seriously doubt you will!

Lace Beauty Lab

pink lace beauty lab via hue Lace Beauty Lab I stumbled upon some lovely inspiration over the weekend.  Lace Beauty Lab is a high-end salon in Miami Beach, Florida.  It’s interiors are bold retro, and deliciously confectionary.   Designed by Doug Meyer, Lace Beauty Lab is old-school 1950′s Miami glamor with Mediterranean and Moroccan accents.

I love the turquoise blue walls shamelessly paired with the kelly green ceiling.   These colors look fabulous with the white and silver accents.  And check out the fabulous star-and-ball ornament light fixtures.  Meyer describes it as “Miami Beach,1968, meets Dorothy Draper meets Tangier of the 1970s.”

Signature Style

DSC 7265 210x300 Signature Style There’s been a lot of talk over the last couple of years about defining your signature decorating style in a sound bite – I think it all started with “Shabby Chic.”  Designers and decorators started coming up with 2-word catch phrases for their style.  A few years back a couple of women started their own business where you sent them several hundred dollars, and they told you what your signature style was based your answers to a series of questions.  This was supposed to get you focused so that you acquire new things with purpose and stay focused on your vision.
