Pipe Dreams, Airstreams, and Pinterest

Let me be clear – I am no camper.  but I have had a pipe dream for years about restoring an Airstream trailer.

Wouldn’t it be fun to decorate it out all retro-dreamy, like a giant dollhouse?

How to Hang Plates & Art Groupings

As an interior decorator in the Nashville area, one of my favorite things that I get to do for clients is to create art groupings on their walls.   They are usually amazed at how quickly I can come up with an arrangement and get them up on the wall.   Here’s how I do it:   first, I gather up like items with the colors I’m looking for to tie in with the room and start playing around with different arrangements.

I layed out these gorgeous plates on my client’s bed this week, working until we got an arrangement we both liked.   This is what I came up with – it’s kind of like an inverted Christmas tree shape over her dresser: [Read more...]

Walking Up Your Stairs Should Be a Happy Experience

Tomorrow afternoon I’m going to be arranging some family photographs in an open stairwell of a client’s home.   That’s got me thinking about different ways to hang art on a staircase wall.

Turn Your Wall of Shame Into a Hall of Fame

I have a passion for hanging art and creating art groupings (strange, I know).  In my book, nothing is better than taking a family’s photographs and creating a gallery wall for them.  I’m still in Atlanta furthering my design education, but I thought today I’d share a family photo gallery I created for a new client last week.

She had done her homework:  all the photography was ready for me and in gorgeous frames, no less.  Framing them in the same frame finish makes the grouping cohesive, but it’s great to vary the actual frame design like she did here.  I worked on the design on the floor before I started swinging my hammer.

Do Your Walls Make You Happy?

Well, do they?  I think the things you hang on your wall should make you happy.  They should reflect your interests and your tastes.  They should put a smile on your face when you walk in the room.   DSC 4511 Do Your Walls Make You Happy?

Plate Collages (The Art of Creative Plate Hanging)

Most of you know you can use an arrangement of plates/dishes to add color and personality to a wall.   But how about getting a little more creative about it?   Try creating a plate collage.  Take a look at some of these beautiful examples – this first one makes me think of water dribbling down the wall . . . .

Express Yourself

I don’t usually agree with Madonna, but I do believe it is important to express yourself.  Life is for living, and creative expression in your home can be amazingly comforting and fulfilling.  Here are some ideas to spark your creativity:

In a modern home, use color sparingly but boldly – like a field of color on one wall to draw the eye to an unexpected space.   If you do this kind of color block technique, make sure you want to be accenting whatever you are accenting.  In this picture from coccozy, they are actually TRYING to draw the eye to the flat screen television, but that isn’t usually the case. Hanging Art Salon Style

It’s really hot to hang art groupings salon-style on a wall.  It takes a lot of confidence to start nailing up art in a seemingly hodge-podge kind of way, and you may feel held back by a lack of cohesive art to choose from (or so you think).  But really, you need very little to unite an odd grouping of art.   Just the idea to do it and the decision to hang 5+ pieces close together make a girl seem really arty and bold.
