Christmas with The Decorologist

Today I’m opening my door to give you a tour of my home at Christmas.  I’m not big on traditional Christmas color schemes, so get ready a heavy dose of pink and gold!

Funky Family Home – Hit or Miss?

This home was featured in the latest issue of Country Living.  It’s an eye-catcher, to be sure.  But on closer inspection, I began to question whether I loved it or hated it.  I don’t mean to be brutal, because it is a fun family home and everyone is entitled to their own sense of style.  But as a design-junkie, it’s fun to really dissect a space and figure out what I like and don’t like – what seems to work and what seems not to – and why.  Stick with me here.

Wowza!  I love this entry hallway.  Graphic, bold, modern – with just the right touch of traditional (it is an old home, afterall).  Love the art groupings on either side of the striped walls.  It totally creates a gallery effect.  I kind of like the chandelier, because the color is a surprise.  Not sure about those striped shades, though.  Overall, a pretty awesome space.  What do you think?

Highlights from A Neighborhood Home Tour

One of my favorite things to do is to attend home tours in historic neighborhoods.   We have our fair share of such annual tours here in Nashville.    The Whitland Neighborhood Home Tour, which I blogged about last year here,  is one of the highlights of my year.  Of course, I wanted to share highlights with you, but I dropped my Android in the lake the day before the tour and didn’t have a cell phone/camera to take!  If I brought in my big camera, I feel sure I would have been removed from the premises.  So I decided to be old-fashioned and take notes of interesting ideas and trends that I saw in each house.  The photos are not from the actual tour, but will help you visualize what I saw.

1.  Of course, oversized lighting is a big trend in contemporary design right now.  And I saw lots of it on this tour – oversized lanterns, pendant lighting, and table lamps.  I *heart* this trend and oversized lighting makes such a statement in any space!  When it comes to lighting, always go bigger than you think you should.   Trust me!

YMCA ShowHouse Fire

I was so sad to hear that the YMCA ShowHouse I visited in Brentwood last month suffered $600,000 worth of damage in a fire.   The builder of the 7,300 square foot European farmhouse bought the home for himself and his family.  Here’s a picture I snapped of the home last week after I heard the news. Leeds Castle

Today I want to share with you one of the most beautiful places in the world – Leeds Castle.  I visited England in February of this year, and touring this castle was on my must-do list.   DSC 1527 Leeds Castle

Home Tour Countdown

Just two more days until the 2010 Crieve Hall Tour of Homes.  We are close to ready.  Or, should I say, our house is close to ready.  Deadlines are good – they help us get things accomplished, right?  As far as house projects, there is nothing like a party or upcoming event to get me (and my husband) in gear.  I had lots of small interior projects to do to prepare the house for this tour, but the exterior projects were the biggies. If you’re in the Nashville area, mark your calendars for the Crieve Hall Tour of Homes.  It’s scheduled for this Sunday, April 25th, from 1-4.  Ticket sales are at my home at 5425 Hill Road Circle.  I’m really excited for my home to be a part of this home tour that highlights renovation projects throughout the Crieve Hall area.

The Nashville Home of artist David Arms

DSC 2534 The Nashville Home of artist David Arms The last time I was in the home of David and Michelle Arms was many years ago.  They then lived in an old stone cottage in East Nashville.  In a mere 900 square feet, they had packed more design genious and artistic imagination than you would ever see in most large showhouse designer homes.   Fast forward 16 years - I recently attended an event at their current home, which happens to be about 2 minutes from my home.  I must say I was excited to see how their style had evolved – and I was not disappointed!

Apartment Therapy House Tour

What a crazy week this has been!  It’s freezing cold and snowy, the kids have been out of school for two days, I’ve worked with a couple of clients on projects, and I’ve been scurrying around planning the decor for a camp-themed women’s retreat at my church this weekend.  The most exciting part of the week was the email I got Monday morning from the managing editor of the Chicago branch of  Apartment Therapy

For those of you who don’t know, Apartment Therapy is one of the most (if not the most) successful decorating blogs/websites there is.  They are famous for their “House Tours” and smaller “House Calls.”  My home was featured for a House Call several months ago, and luckily was chosen for a full House Tour to launch the new year!   They did a really nice write-up, although I really don’t love the cheesy name they gave my tour icon smile Apartment Therapy House Tour .  Click here to have a look around!  Make sure you hit the “Enter House Tour” button within the article to see all 20 pictures they posted.  I’d appreciate any comments you could leave on the site.  Have a great weekend and stay warm!

Historic Home Tour Highlights

I’m a big fan of historic home tours.  Here in Nashville, there are about a dozen annual tours of historic neighborhoods.  I hit as many as I can.  My current favorite is a tour of a high-end historic neighborhood off West End Avenue.  Recently, my daughter and I spent a Saturday appreciating the architecture and soaking up decorating inspiration. 16 300x212 Historic Home Tour Highlights
