Child’s Play – A Virtual Design for Boy’s Room

As an interior decorator based in Nashville, you may think I only design for local clients.  Over the weekend, I worked on a Virtual Design for a 9-year-old boy living in Pennsylvania.   This is the current state of his room, and it is definitely time for a change!

Building a Room Design Around An Inspiration Piece

Happy Friday, fellow Decor Junkies!  Today I’m sharing a Virtual Design I did for a client’s living room a few months back.  The inspiration for the entire room was the fabulously fun rug, plus the pair of art pieces you see below:

My client had recently purchased the rug and also wanted to use her existing art in the new room.   I love the color combination of blue, purple, and teal!  When I create these kind of Virtual Designs for long distance clients, I provide a list of resources and prices of all the items included in the design.  That way they can simply order the items they love or find similar items on their own to achieve the look of the Inspiration Board.

Would love to hear what you think about this design and color combination!  Have a lovely weekend.

Are Matching Bedroom Suites Outdated?

Not everyone is able to start from scratch in their bedroom.  I have a client who is fortunate enough to be getting rid of her dated bedroom suite and bedding and starting anew.  While her tastes are still traditional, she wants a look that is current and takes her forward without being trendy.  She wants a peaceful, neutral bedroom that will appeal to both her husband and herself.  This is the Inspiration Board I recently created to cast a vision for her space.

We decided to use an updated neutral on the walls and a grayed blue on the ceiling.  Notice that this is not a “matched set” bedroom.  If you are buying new bedroom furniture, please don’t buy a bedroom “suite” or matching set!   The creamy painted bedside tables and desk keep things light and current, but are anything but trendy.   Go for larger bedside tables than you are used to – maybe a pair of small dressers if you have room.  A bench at the end of the bed is the perfect place to take off your shoes or pile up your decorative pillows at night.  Finally, don’t forget to treat yourself to a really special hanging light fixture like the one pictured here.

Everything in this virtual design is not “made” to go together, but it all blends well.   I think it’s so much more interesting than a matchy-matchy bedroom suite.  Are you “over” traditional bedroom suites?

For every design, you need inspiration.  Maybe it’s a piece of art, a beautiful rug, or your grandmother’s china.  Or maybe it’s a specific color that makes you smile when you enter the room.  In the case of the design I’m sharing today, it’s Benjamin Moore Turquoise Mist 695.

A reader recently contacted me about a Virtual Design for her living room and dining room.  She and her husband had lived in their home for a couple of years and were ready to create a “grown-up” space.  She asked for me to cast a vision for her space based on her style preferences, spatial limitations, and budget.  This is where we started:

Long-Distance Decorating

How on earth can you design a room when you and your decorator are in a long-distance relationship?  Let me share a little about how I am able to help clients long-distance through the magic of this little laptop computer!

Here are photographs of the nursery in one of my on-line client’s home.  The “new” room had to include the white shelf you see here, as well as a blonde crib, dresser, and a sadly-dated upholstered glider rocker that were used by previous babies.  But my client wanted her new baby to have a “new” space all her own.

My challenge was to cast a vision for this room without actually being on-hand to make it happen.  We talked about what she wanted for this room, as well as what she didn’t want (which is equally important).   I suggested a ballet pink for the walls and a chocolate brown for the ceiling.  After that decision was made, I put together an inspiration board to help my client  visualize what I was beginning to envision for this room.  The inspiration board included what she already had and new items to purchase, including a light fixture from Lowe’s, polka dot curtains, and a fun tree decal that can be purchased on-line.  I also suggested she paint the blonde dresser in the chocolate brown from the ceiling, and invest in a custom slipcover for her dated glider.  This is what I sent her, along with specific written suggestions:

Tack Boards

My latest bargain was found at my local Goodwill store.  Just stopped in to find a gray belt, which I found.  I always go through the leaning stack of framed art in the back.  I found not one, but two bamboo tack boards with white frames.  They looked so cool, I thought at first they were just framed bamboo.  Then I realized someone had made them to be tack boards.  They totally look like they are right out of a Ballard Designs catalog!  DSC 9178 300x199 Tack Boards
