In the Pink at the Southern Living Showcase House Tour

The Southern Living Showcase Home was open to tour here in Nashville through this last weekend, and it did not disappoint.  I love the exterior - the REAL shutters with actual shutterdogs, the gas lamp above the entry, the gray gutters.

Let me get the bragging out of the way so that you can tour the rest of the home.  As a Nashville paint color specialist, I had the honor of being called in to assist AB Home Interior’s Amanda Burdge in choosing paint colors for the guest room.

Knowing What to Change and What NOT to Change When Decorating

Here in Nashville, there are many houses that were built in the 1960s and 1970s.  I see a lot of entry floors from that era that look exactly like this:

This client had grown weary of her dark, dated entry but wasn’t sure she wanted to completely redo the floor.

A little paint goes a long way, but even someone who loves color can find it difficult to choose which hues to paint one’s walls and furnishings.  There are SO many choices, right???

I had a great Color Consultation with a girl over the weekend – she knew the “look” she wanted but wasn’t sure how to make it happen.  After 2 hours and a brand new palette for one floor on her home, she is fearless and excited to watch the transformation that color can create.

My Forecast for Hot Fall Colors

I’ve been doing a little research about color trends for fall and 2010.  Lots of big ideas for what’s gonna be hot.   But there’s a big difference between what the “trendsetters” are pushing and what the public will embrace.  This is my personal forecast for the hottest colors and trends in decorating.

DSC 9013 300x257 My Forecast for Hot Fall Colors Gold, gunmetal, and copper will be the favorite metals over the next year.  Designers predict a re-emergence of the 70′s Brady Bunch harvest gold, greens, and orange.  I’m not buying that, but I do think avocado green is making a come-back, but paired with teal/peacock blues and fuschia.  All this recession talk is setting us up for the yearning for some opulence in our homes, even it that just means opulent colors.  So think jewel tones, dark and rich.   Like European royal kind of colors.   Or maybe exotic bohemian.  Your choice.

  • Fear of Color – Sorry guys, but beige IS boring.
  • Artwork Hung too High – Don’t strain your neck, hang art at eye level!  If art is above a piece of furniture, hang it 3-6 inches above the furniture below it.
  • Unused or Underutilized Rooms – Nothing is sadder than an unused room, if you still have the old “formal living room” it’s time to transform it into a [Read more...]
