Get Your Furniture Arrangement In Balance

I see it all the time:  rooms that lack balance.  When your furniture is not balanced, the whole room feels off-kilter.

Here’s a good example off an off-kilter room I worked in last week.  From this angle it didn’t look so bad, in regard to furniture placement.  There wasn’t a lot of color in the room, obviously.  First of all, I suggested we move away from the paint color that looked a bit like a band-aid.  Sorry, but pinky-beige is not your friend.  Just ask Color Expert Maria Killam how she feels about pinky-beige!

A Child’s Room Design with IKEA & The Decorologist

After giving birth to her 4th daughter, my client (and long-time friend) needed to rethink her home’s floorplan.  The former den was about to get a makeover – with a little help from The Decorologist and IKEA.

The idea was to convert the former den into a bedroom for the two oldest daughters so the baby and toddler could each have their own rooms (very necessary for successful naptimes!).  They already had twin beds and wanted to make a list for the upcoming trip to the modern decor mecca, IKEA, in Atlanta.  We took measurements and worked up a solid furniture arrangement, determining what the girls needed and what would fit into the new space perfectly.

The kicker was determining the perfect color for the room.   In the end, the color scheme was  a compromise that met the desires of both daughters and momma.

You see, momma is NOT a pink kind of girl.  Of course, that’s the paint color the daughters were begging for!  Initially, everything was pretty much beige on beige – beige carpet, beige walls, beige sofas.  Here’s the “before” of the area where the beds would ultimately be placed: [Read more...]

Pink is the Thing for Spring!

Think pink!  It’s about time pink came around again.  I’m not ashamed to admit that I ADORE pink – my favorites are ballet pinks like Benjamin Moore’s Pristine OC-75 and Pink Moire 50 and Pantone’s Color of the year 2011:  Honeysuckle Pink.

2011 Color of the Year . . .

honeysuckle pink 2011 Color of the Year . . . Pantone, the world renown color authority, has announced it’s 2011 Color of the Year.  Honeysuckle Pink!  If I sound excited, it’s because I am.  I love a good pink, and I’m not going to apologize for it.

Pantone’s Leatrice Eiseman says, “In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues.”  I’ll buy that.

In the Pink

Pink isn’t just for little girls anymore.  Really.  It looks totally grown-up when combined with neutrals, modern designs, and clean lines.

Pair pink with brown, gray, or black to ground it.  Pair it with white for a fresh, crisp look.

Keep foundation pieces neutral and use pink accessories that can be easily changed out.

Use simple patterns, especially geometric ones like checks and stripes.
