Here are a few great ideas to keep in mind if you are ready to redesign a room in your home, which are illustrated in this recent before-and-after of a client’s den.
1. Stay true to who you are. With children no longer in her home, this client was ready to redesign her den and make it a warm and welcoming place to hang out with her husband and enjoy informal gatherings with their friends. This is where we started:

There’s been a lot of talk over the last couple of years about defining your signature decorating style in a sound bite – I think it all started with “Shabby Chic.” Designers and decorators started coming up with 2-word catch phrases for their style. A few years back a couple of women started their own business where you sent them several hundred dollars, and they told you what your signature style was based your answers to a series of questions. This was supposed to get you focused so that you acquire new things with purpose and stay focused on your vision. |
| Let’s play “That’s What I Like!” I sometimes use this exercise with clients who are at a total loss as to what they want or would like to have in their homes. It’s a great way to discover what you love and why, and a good way to get you in the habit of making choices. Grab a friend and go window shopping at any store that sells home-related items. |  |

The game is this: you have to make a choice and decide on one thing you would buy from that window, display rack, or display table. Don’t actually buy anything – but decide to pick up one thing you would take home if you had to. You have to pick something, even if you hate everything you see. |
