Decorating for Valentine’s Day

Well, it’s that time again.  I just put up my second annual Valentine’s tree!  It’s a small flocked tree that sits on the entry table as you come through my front door.

My decorations include some glittery hearts, small pink and white Christmas balls, and some vintage Valentine’s cards tucked into the branches.

This year I added a few new decorations, including these precious little golden owls that my friend, Lezlie, gave me for Christmas!

I found this cool old painting at an estate sale and tucked it in the background – I love the winter scene and the pinkish hues in the sky and tree buds.DSC 3970 Decorating for Valentines Day

In the mirror behind, I tucked in a vintage wedding photo I found years ago – as well as one of the paint chip Valentine’s cards I made last year.

Sometimes it’s nice to devote a small space to decorating for the minor holidays.

Do you decorate (even just a little) for Valentine’s Day?

A Victorian Christmas

The Christmas festivities have begun – my family and I travelled to my husband’s aunt and uncle’s home yesterday for our annual family Christmas get-together.  I just have to share a little of my aunt and uncle’s historic home.

They have lived in this lovely Victorian home for the last 20 years, and it has been a popular Bed and Breakfast for several of those years.  It even has it’s own fancy name:  Academy Place – named for the girl’s school it used to house a century ago.

One of my favorite things about this home is the amazing fireplaces in many of its rooms.

Christmas with The Decorologist

Today I’m opening my door to give you a tour of my home at Christmas.  I’m not big on traditional Christmas color schemes, so get ready a heavy dose of pink and gold!

Serial Furniture Rearranging & Other Disorders

As many of you know, I switched out my living room and dining room a few months ago and enjoyed a change of scenery in my home.  As the holidays approach, I decided I wanted enjoy the fireplace (sans books – see here what I’m talking about) so I switched them back.

That doesn’t mean my living room looks like it used to, since I traded sofas in the living and enclosed sleeping porch.  This is where the red sofa used to sit:

Trading Spaces – The “New” Living Room

I’ve had several requests from you guys to see the “after” of the living room that now resides in my old dining room.  Here it is:

This was the room when it was set up as the dining room – as it had been for the last 10 years. [Read more...]

Vintage Luggage

Time for sharing another one of my collections.  I love having collections that are as functional as they are aesthetically-pleasing.

Vintage luggage can be found at yard sales, antique malls, and ebay.  They come in beautiful vintage colors, instantly giving away the time period from which they came.

These funky orangey-brown pieces blend perfectly into my husband’s office.  They belonged to his grandfather and still bear his initials.

Vintage Colored Glassware

I have a few pieces of green depression glass that belonged to my grandmother.  I keep them in a cupboard in my dining room.  I saw an episode of Cash in the Attic last week where a couple sold their depression glass for over $1000.  They had a whole lot more of it than me, of course!  DSC 9172 300x205 Vintage Colored Glassware

Vintage Chairs

If you know me at all, you know I am a sucker for estate sales and yard sales.  If you know me really well, you know I am a sucker for vintage chairs of all kinds.  My husband thinks my chair obsession is excessive, but I use them all!  Now, I’m not talking Aunt Agatha’s matched Victorian set.  I love mismatched dining room chairs, funky original upholstery, and painted finishes.  I love the juxtaposition of a gathering of unrelated furniture that creates a new and original look.  Check out some of my favorite finds below.

DSC 8959 199x300 Vintage Chairs This is a very comfortable and sturdy vintage chair I found in one of those never-used formal living rooms at an estate sale.  It was actually bought by an antiques dealer before I could snag it – I chased him down the driveway and asked him if he was willing to resell it.  Got it for $60.  It has original upholstery, not a spot on it.
