Imperial Trellis Trend

Imperial trellis – I’ve been loving this trend for some time now.  You’ve all seen it, but I bet most of you didn’t know what to call it.  Aren’t you glad I’m here to do all the research for you?  The trellis pattern was really popular in the 1970’s – but this rendition has an Asian flair.

Imperial trellis is showing up on fabric, wallpaper, and decorative items everywhere.    Chloe Sevigny’s entry hall is papered in green imperial trellis.

You’ll see imperial trellis in a variety of colors, with the most popular including kelly green, citrine yellow, chocolate brown, and spa blue.

Designer Kelly Wearstler has a line of wallpapers and fabrics in imperial trellis, which has certainly boosted its popularity.

I suppose these vases host a link pattern, but it’s awfully close to the trellis.  Found these lovelies on Etsy.Image from The Decorologist

A bit of this imperial trellis pattern stretched over a few artist canvases is a great way to add your own art to a bare wall.

A couple of  chairs upholstered in imperial trellis may be the way to go for you.   These chairs certainly add a lot of fun to the mix.  It’s hard to imagine this room without those two kelly green chairs!

Are you digging imperial trellis?  I’d love to hear what you think!

don’t think i have ever- responded before- but I did not like this design way back when- it still doesn’t grab me- but that’s why there are so many different designs, styles, and trends. I know there are people that this really get their attention. I love your emails, information, and research-

Thanks for the lesson! Didn’t know the pattern name and history, but I’ve definitely been seeing Imperial Trellis EVERYWHERE for the last couple of years! I do like it in the green best.

Joan, I know what you mean when a trend comes back around you never liked in the first place – kind of like leg warmers or shoulder pads! Even the most popular color of the trellis, kelly green, is pretty retro. But I really do like it – in small doses. Thanks for your comment 🙂

In the green chair room what really jumps out at me is the Etruscan horse. I love archeological type accessories and art. I’m probably hopelessly out of vogue.

I really like the pattern and now want to find some fabric to make some kitchen curtains. I like the green but would use the chocolate brown in my home. I just love the pattern on a white background. Thanks for the info Kristie.

I’m with Joan. I look at the wallpaper and see the 70’s! Let’s hang green and yellow “love beads” in the doorway. However, I like it okay in the last 2 pictures. Smaller pattern, more of an accessory. Thanks, Kristie!

Michelle, and what’s wrong with love beads?? haha! You know, it’s all about context. It’s like avocado green being such a hot color right now – if you paired it again with harvest gold, it would look too 70’s. But paired with a fresh option like peacock blue, it looks up-to-date. There are no bad colors, just bad color combinations. I wonder if that may be true for trends as well. Thanks for the comment – love hearing from you!

I was at Burlington Coat Factory at 100 Oaks yesterday and they had some canvases with this pattern in a soft teal color. There was one large canvas and 2 sets of 3 smaller ones.
