Decorating for the Fall

Need some ideas for fall decorating?  Here are a few to jumpstart your creative juices:

A wreath is classic.  Experiment with materials such as leaves, wheat, or feathers.   You don’t even have to hang a wreath – why not use it as part of a centerpiece on your table?  Use it to encircle a large candle, a white pumpkin, or whatever seems autumnal.

Add in a new color to your existing color palette.   How about adding in coral or red with the colors you already have?  If you already use those colors, add in a more neutral olive, muted green, or smoky blue. Combine autumn red or orange splashes with a neutral or contrasting base such as taupe, olive, or blue.   Bring in these colors with the use of pillows, throws, candles, table accessories, and accent rugs.

When I think about autumn, I think nature:  look for moss, grasses, pinecones, twigs, gourds, acorns, and small branches.   Use these natural elements to accent side tables, adhere to picture frames, or dress up your entry door.   Pumpkins can continue on after Halloween, of course.  I particularly like the white “Lumina” variety.

Fall is a good time to cluster your seating near a  fireplace to create a cozy conversation area or reading spot.

Group colored candles on mantels and tabletops to add warmth and light.  Consider colors like brown, dark blue, various greens.  I chose some darker blue ones to pull out the colors in these peacock feathers.  If you don’t have your own fowls to pluck from, both peacock and turkey feathers are available at Michaels.

Create a story with your tablescape.  Candles, colored autumnal glass, Indian corn, gourds, and fall-inspired dishes set the scene for fall fellowship.

Or you may prefer a simple palette of two colors.   Here I used gold and creamy whites to make a serene table.

Add furry pillows, cozy blankets, and fur throws to warm up and add comfort to your space.  How about draping a faux fur throw across an accent table or an ottoman rather than on your seating?

Now that you’ve warmed up your home for fall, why don’t you go make a pot of chili?   Then invite me for dinner.
