The Secret of Freshening Up Your Bedroom

What’s the best way to freshen up your bedroom?   I like to lighten things up in the spring/summer with fresh bedding and simple pillows. Who says you have to use the same bedding all year long?

Isn’t it lovely?  It’s Cynthia Rowley’s Veronique.  I found it at Homegoods last week.

I think it works really nicely with my wall color.  It has a white background, so it looks fresher than what I have on the bed for the winter (which is a solid lavender-gray like the accent pillow here).

I tend to use strict symmetry in bedrooms because it makes them so much more peaceful and calming.

When I switch the bedding out every six months or so, it lifts my spirits until the weather changes again and I’m ready to go back to the previous bedding.  Do you use the same bedding until you tire of it, or do you change it out seasonally?

At the moment I like a cacophony of colour..the brighter and more unmatched the better. I think there is something in me that just wants a wild bedroom at the moment. I have found all summer that to wake up stimulated by bright oranges and blues with a blue sky and green leaves and flowers just outside the window makes me believe I’m on holiday..even though I’m not!

      Carol,
The psychologist in me can’t help but analyze the Freudian nature of that comment . . . 🙂

I always say I am going to change it up for the seasons, but then the season is over and I am too late. Like you said yesterday- “So much to do- so little time.” Espcially when it comes to my own home! Thanks for sharing- your bedroom is beautiful!

      Kelly,
If it makes you feel any better, even though I usually decorate for all holidays, I completely skipped Halloween decorating last year and Easter decorating the year before. Sometimes we just don’t have the time to tend to our own homes, do we? When we’re busy decorating other people’s homes, ours can become secondary. But I also strongly believe my home is my laboratory, and if my home isn’t nurtured how can I nurture others’ homes?

Personally I love the beautiful bedding. But need something more utilitarian – almost as if it were a young boy’s room – to withstand dh’s presence. Some guys are just really hard on fabric! Any ideas?

Lee, That’s the great thing about this bedding – it’s 100% cotton! Totally machine-washable. Does “dh” stand for “dearheart?” – just guessing 😉

    Hey, Kristie!
Soooooo looking forward to having you “analyze” my house on Monday. 🙂 Did you receive the e-mail I sent you? I sent it to your yahoo address and then forwarded it to your gmail address.

    Love the bedding!
And…actually, even wondered about doing that myself. 🙂

    Blessings,
    Suzanne

This bedding looks fabulous and works great for your bedroom. Your bedrooms are getting nicer and nicer, with the new lamps and now the new bedding. Lovely! I think each bedroom should have at least two sets of bedding, so it can give us some change in color and mood. That does make coordinating with other accessories in the room harder. One trick is to have compliment colors between the two sets of bedding, for example, one of my set is yellow for spring/summer, and the other set is blue. When I select other stuff, e.g, a cushion for a chair, I selected yellow. This way, it will go with the yellow bedding set tone on tone, and go with the blue bedding by compliment.

Great idea, Joy! Thanks for sharing – when you have two complimentary colors to work with, you can really change things up by using more of one and less of the other (and vice versa).

Yup – I change up my bedding for winter and spring. Though since I’ve given up on duvets altogether, this summer it might not be as drastic a change. Maybe just folding my gray quilt at the end of my bed to show off the pink bedspread. Though I also feel like this is going to be the year I finally find the perfect spriggy floral 100% cotton (and not sateen) sheets. That will really brighten things up!

Nope, I am boring I guess. That would be fun though. I am afraid that it would lead to other changes if I didn’t find just the right bedding. Plus, all my bedding is custom made, and it just kills me to put it away after all the money I spent on it. I just saw the cutest Cynthia Rowley yellow ruffled quilt at HomeGoods, I love her bedding.

    Hi,

I am in love with your bedside lamps and chandelier! Could you tell where to purchase those lovely items? Also wondering if you have an article on kitchen pendant lighting. Needing inspiration to go with my new kitchen!!
    Thank you in advance!

The chandelier is vintage – found it at an antique mall and spray-painted it. The lamps are from HomeGoods.
