If you read Monday’s post, this is the exterior paint scheme that my client chose to go with for her Federal-style home in Brentwood.
And the winner is . . . Option 3!
Initially, my client told me that she had always wanted a home with white trim and black shutters. This was the option with white trim – Benjamin Moore’s Cloud White 967. After seeing the different options with and without the shutters, she decided the black shutters were too much for her afterall. She never would have thought that until she saw the Virtual Mock-Up both ways. The body color on this option is Benjamin Moore’s Rockport Gray HC105. Her door will be glossy black.
It seems that most of you who responded liked either Option 2 or Option 6 the best, with the half-fan detail above the windows painted out body color. My client originally wanted those half-fans to “disappear,” which is why I created these options. However, the Virtual Mock-Ups helped her “see” how these different options would actually look, and she decided she liked them better painted trim color.
Body Color – Rockport Gray HC105, Trim Color – Cloud White 967
It’s interesting that most who responded liked the house with shutters, rather than without.
Body Color – Grant Beige HC83, Trim Color – Woodcliff Lake 980
It is, of course, necessary for clients to have a Benjamin Moore fandeck of paint colors so that they can see the actual colors I am recommending. The virtual renderings help them see the overall look and feel of the paint scheme, but it is vital to see the paint chips and to also test the proposed colors on the house before making the final decision!
So, what was The Decorologist’s favorite scheme?
I preferred the trim in Benjamin Moore’s Classic Gray 1548 and the body in Copley Gray HC104. The trim in this scheme is not as white and the body color is darker than the scheme that my client chose. I also preferred the no-shutter option, which my client also chose. I only gave me client options that I believed would result in a good outcome, so no one is right or wrong here! What’s right is what feels right to homeowners when provided with the best options for their home. Find out more about by clicking on Choosing Exterior Colors with Confidence.
I hope you will post before and after pics of the actual house when the paint job is complete. I would love to see the finished product!@
Of course! I can’t wait.
I was dying to see the final choice! Will you post a picture once the work is complete?
Sheila,
I actually drove by there yesterday to see if they had gotten started. I will definitely post the “after.”
I love the mock ups you did Kristie, because it really does bring the space to life for the client. And personally I love the winner. It has all the elements that enhance the exterior, Fabulous.

We are about to decide on a paint. It looks like we have a similar rood (light brown).
We are thinking about Rockport Gray and our door is glossy black. Is it weird to have our shutters painted GLOSSY black?
Yes, it’s weird to paint them glossy on an exterior! Never do higher than an eggshell/satin finish on exterior shutters – because of light reflection, the color will appear quite a bit lighter than you intended and it also makes the wood appear plastic-y. Gloss on front doors are great, though!
