Making Over The Children’s Home – Here We Go!

Tomorrow’s the big day!  My girls in the Greater Nashville RESA Chapter will begin painting and decorating one of the children’s group homes on the campus of the Tennessee Baptist Children’s Homes. We’ve been planning this for many months, and during the next week our plans will come together. Today Mr. Man picked up 35+ gallons of paint that will lay the groundwork for this transformation.

We are working in pairs, and Elizabeth Scruggs of Superior Construction and Design is my partner in this project. Here are the before photos of the areas we are tackling:

This great room needs some lightening and brightening, some color and personality! Although we will have to keep the large pieces of furniture, we will be painting the entire space, adding a beautiful new rug, pillows, art, lamps, and accessories. And we are doing a fun makeover of this huge fireplace, so stay tuned for that! We are grateful to Sherwin-Williams, who is donating a large portion of the paint for the two homes we will be working on in the month of September. They are such a great company and have been so helpful to us – especially our rep, Amanda Farris. Interestingly, the manager at our local Sherwin-Williams has fostered a child from TBCH’s program, too!

This bookcase will certainly be getting a facelift. We will be filling it with the books donated in the Meaningful Makeover Book Drive – and the other five homes on campus will also get books for their bookcases, as well!

Ferguson’s Lighting Gallery in Lebanon, TN has donated some beautiful new light fixtures for both the living room and dining room. I can’t wait to see them replace these ceiling fans:

We will be keeping the ceiling fan in the bedroom that Elizabeth and I are redecorating, as it helps the girls sleep. Peanut butter walls will be gone by the end of tomorrow – a soothing light blue will take their place. New bedding, dresser, lamps, art, curtains, chair, and more will hopefully bring smiles to the faces of two sweet young girls who share this room.

The bathroom will get its own facelift, too:

Here’s is just a sneak peek of a few of the items I purchased for the girls’ bedroom. It may look like a hodge-podge of colors now, but believe me – it’s going to be absolutely darling and unique when it comes together! We are thankful to the Clarcor Filter Foundation for their generous donation that is enabling us to buy lots of happy decor for these kiddos.

Elizabeth will be bringing in some of the things she bought for the living room, and I can’t wait to see what she found for the space. There are three more bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as a large covered outdoor area, that will be made over by other RESA members in our group. Be sure to follow me on FB and Instagram to see our progress (and maybe a few live videos) over the weekend and into next week!

Yes, I know Monday is Labor Day – but this is a labor of love, and we can’t wait to get started! Have a great weekend!

I am so excited about the makeover at TBCH. In ’60-70’s I was involved in volunteer work at CH. The cottages were built during that time frame. Mrs. Harrell got me involved (a cottage bears her name. ). Hope I can see the results when you finish. Thanks.

Wonderful, Annette! The first house we are working on is the Creasman House. We should be finished up by next Thursday. It may be on Talk of the Town the end of next week!

Thank you so much, Laura! We got most of the walls painted today, and it already looks so much lighter and more peaceful. One of the older girls popped in this afternoon and wanted to see what her new wall color looked like. Thankfully, she absolutely loved it! I can’t wait to see how she reacts when she sees the room completed. 🙂

Tell those children they are lucky ducks because you are doing for them what you do for your own children. High end design shows them lots of folks are wanting all the best for them in their lives.
